Dear colleagues

After 8 years on the International Council first and then Executive Committee of ICHS, of which the last 2 years were at the helm of the Society, time has come for me to transition to the role of past president and to hand over the presidency to my esteemed colleague Professor Monica Slavin. This is a moment of reflection for me and an opportunity to express my gratitude for all of you who contributed so that the Society is now in a very solid place.

We just finished an incredibly successful meeting in Athens, Greece our 20thbiennial meeting. The meeting was full of energy, camaraderie, networking, high caliber speakers/discussions, notable attendance of several iconic figures in the early history of ICHS, all in a beautiful venue in the shadow of the Acropolis, a fitting setting.  We had an energetic participation of over 300 attendees, coming from 38 different countries and 5 continents. We introduced new features in the meeting such an ICHS awards (ICHS Junior investigation award, ICHS citation award, Lifetime achievement award, all awarded to notable scholars in our field. Despite the difficult funding climate, the meeting enjoyed Support by several learned organizations and pharmaceutical industry.

In the last 20 months the Society has seen a “renaissance” with over 50% increase in membership, expansion in South America. In fact, nearly 10% of attendees in the Athens meeting came from South America, a testament to our synergistic interaction with the InFocus organization, an interaction that is expected to strengthen further. This is an exciting moment in our illustrious Society that approaches 40 years of existence.  I am convinced that is destined to soar to even higher heights and become more relevant than ever, in view of the continuous expansion of immunocompromised patients and drugs that suppress or modulate immune responses. The avalanche of mega-data and genomic profiling, microbiome and personalized risk assessment, contributions of pathogens to cancer, the revolution of biomaterial research create great areas of research and discussion in our field and makes ICHS the best forumfor collaboration and communication on these cutting edge concepts.

Needless to say, I will continue to support the Society’s mission in the future any way I can.

Thank you all for all your past, current and future contributions to ICHS.

Thank you for making the 20th ICHS Congress such a success and looking forward to see you in the next tremendous ICHS meeting in Melbourne Australia in June 7 – 9, 2020.
